A New Weaving Project 3

Rag shuttle

Rag shuttle

The warp is 100 ends in a 10 dent reed – so the mats will be 10 inches wide… We have two kinds of shuttle to use for rag rugs, for these little mats we’ll use the rag shuttle that Constance is holding.

We have a very nice ski shuttle, but it is too big for this project.

Wooden slat spacers

Wooden slat spacers

We started with a little bit of blue warp yarn woven at the beginning to lock the rags into place.

Two thin wooden slats are woven in as spacers between each rag mat. The exposed warps will become a short fringe at either end of the mat when we cut them apart at the end of the weaving process.

Each end is finished with a weaving hemstitch, which separates the warp fringe into bundles of four or five,  and anchors the threads so no other finishing is needed
