Boring Beetle

Black and White

Black and White

Constance was peacefully minding her own business when this spectacular long-horned beetle strolled across the yard…

Goodness!

Goodness!

If camouflage is the reason for the amazing  colour scheme, then it needs to get away from the dandelions in the driveway!

…we looked it up as soon as we got inside and found out it was Rosalia funebris, the Banded Alder Borer, but it is the least boring insect we have seen in a long time!!!  Isn’t Nature just amazing!

  1. Spectacular!
We haven’t seen that in our Northwest yard. I expect the nearby alder trees are happy about that.

  2. Its range includes your backyard too! Western North America Alaska to Mexico according to the guide, but this is the first one I remember ever seeing! The larvae eat fallen alder, so I think your upright trees are OK!

  3. Great photos of Constance and her new “friend”. Have never seen one like this. We have a LOT of bugs in Mo. but not that one….at least as far as we know. Thanks for sharing.
