Things on the Beach

Jellyfish

Jellyfish

Tansy found many interesting things on the beach in Haida Gwaii: she came across several of these enormous red Jellyfish…

Dogfish

and the remains of a dogfish (a kind of small shark).

Octopus

There seemed to be rather a lot of suckers on this beached Octopus…

Turban Snail

but Tansy liked finding a Turban Snail with its periostracum still attached.

Tansy also came across this dead Tope Shark

…her feet smelled a little fishy when she got back into her Pelican Case for the ride home.

  1. She had no idea just how smelly that shark was until she climbed up of a closer look at the “soup fin”. She smelled bad for days afterwards, even though she washed her clothes, and feet.

She saw another tope shark in the same bay just a little distance away and worried there might be a shark mortality problem happening. So far the shark people have not written back to let her know what they think.

She loved her pelican case, it allowed her to get out more often, even when the going was rough, without fear for life and limb. It even floats, if needed.

  2. Eeeeew! A smelly sort of biology field trip for Tansy. Good thing she has a strong curiosity and a strong stomach – to say nothing of her strong smell!

  3. Having her own Pelican case is such a good idea, given that she is such an intrepid traveler. Seeing all the dead creatures on the beach does seem worrisome. The smell of the dead shark is one souvenir that I am sure the other Hittys would prefer her to leave behind!

    • Tansy loves her Pelican case!!! She was so glad it became available for her use – her favourite photographer had been afraid of snapping her limbs or crushing her in the scramble to get on and off the little boats. Tansy was proud of her Shark-stink, it meant she was doing real science work! The other girls are glad that she always has a bath before telling stories of her adventures!

  4. as always I leave this blog more educated then when I arrived! Tansy is not only brave but also has a fine scientific curiosity. I confess I had to look up the periostracum!! Thanks for a fun lesson and wonderful pics.

    • Tansy loves to feel she has been useful. Though you could probably go through life without having to know what a periostracum is, She thinks it makes the world more interesting when you do!

  5. Tansy is so curious and interested in things she finds! She might be interested in attending biology classes to learn even more about the beach creatures.
